Alohate from Hawaii: Civil Unions battle turning ugly…

lgbt, politics, religion 3 Comments »

As a civil unions bill winds its way through the Hawaiian legislature (currently in hearings in the Senate judiciary committee), a fierce battle rages outside the state capitol between equality advocates and those against any form of same-sex union.

Lesbian blogger Keori, who has been liveblogging for Pam’s House Blend, relates her post-hearing experience …

(please note I have added a link below for reference)

You know, it gets really tiresome to be called diseased and a pedophile and a rapist and an abomination and a threat to America three dozen times in one day. It infuriates me to hear that yes, heterosexuals have special rights (at least they admitted it finally!) and that is how it should be because The Big Book of Bronze Age Fairy Tales says so. To hear little old ladies screaming that they would rather see their grandchildren commit suicide than “be part of that disgusting, filthy, evil lifestyle”, isn’t even remotely amusing anymore.

Even better is to, due to the concussion headache beginning to blind me, forget to take off my little green and gold “equality” sticker on the way out of the building, and be followed to the bus stop by a bunch of red shirts with signs. Three 6’5″, 200 pound Islander guys with signs saying “Gay marriage is wrong” and “John 3:16” followed the lone little white girl with her laptop case across the street, yelling at me, “Repent!”, calling me a bitch and a whore, telling me, “You just need a real man to fuck you straight.” Nothing I haven’t heard before.

Then one of them said, “We know who you are now, and what you drive. We saw you last Thursday. You better watch yourself, fucking haole bitch.” Not one of the 20 people standing around the bus stop said anything to them. I got on the first bus that came along, got off three stops down the street, and caught my right bus a few minutes later. I rode home all alone, with my headphones on, praying no one bothered me. I don’t want to ever hear another fake apology from these people saying that they don’t actually hate queers, they’re just “protecting traditional marriage”. It’s just the latest lie in their christian hate grab bag.

The last time we were in Hawaii was back in 2001. While there we visited the Polynesian Cultural Center, which we later learned was owned and operated by the Mormon church. Considering recent events here in California,  it is a mistake we will not repeat. And if this civil unions bill fails to pass, we won’t make the mistake of vacationing again in Hawaii either.

Hate truly knows no borders.

Religious and conservative reactions to Milk’s Oscar wins

behrTed Behr of Movieguide.org, a Christian movie review site didn’t have much love for the Oscars this year…

The Academy Awards showed its support for sexual perversions last night at its annual Oscar ceremony.

The Oscar audience applauded madly when Penn, who won Best Actor for his portrayal of murdered homosexual activist Harvey Milk in the movie MILK, angrily chastised voters in California, including 70% of black voters, for having the gall in last November’s elections to support the real definition of marriage.

In a mean-spirited curse, Penn said, “I think it’s a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect on their great shame, and their shame in their grandchildren’s eyes if they continue that support. We’ve got to have equal rights for everyone.”

The audience also clapped when the winning screenwriter for MILK, Dustin Lance Black, proclaimed his bigotry when he commented, “If Harvey had not been taken from us 30 years ago, I think he would want me to say to all the gay and lesbian kids out there tonight who have been told they are less than by the churches, by the government, by their families, that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures of value, and that no matter what anyone tells you, God does love you and that very soon, I promise you, you will have equal rights, federally, across this great nation of ours. Thank you, God, for Harvey Milk!”

At the beginning of the show, host Hugh Jackman described the message of MILK as, “It’s okay to be gay.”

Of course, Jesus Christ believes otherwise.

While I am certainly no expert on the New Testament, I have it on good authority that Jesus never brought up man on man action not once in his teachings. Now divorce… that’s a different matter.

And here is a sampling of comments from the fine denizens of Free Republic (courtesy of Joe.My.God) so you don’t have to burn your eyes visiting their site:

  • “Seems that the Oscars have gone the way of the Nobel … Commies Queers Globull warming idiots and terrorist lovers need only apply.”
  • “Hollywood awards have nothing to do with movies and everything to do with the homosexual agenda. It’s nothing but a bunch of liberal queers giving each other a congratulatory slap on the ass for using movies to promote homosexuality.”
  • “Penn, milking the man-milk dispenser, yet again.”
  • “He just made a plea for Gay’s to be able to marry…Then he thanks the country for electing Obama. He’s scum.”
  • “Here it comes again. When “Brokeback Mountain” didn’t win best picture the fruits were screaming like we put shards of glass in the nation’s KY Jelly supply. We’ll probably get the same with “Milk.””
  • “At least Milk has a happy ending!”

And the headline over at World Net Daily reads “Oscars turn into blatant homosex-fest.

The hate is just palpable isn’t it? As said by Pam at Pam’s House blend… haters just need to own the word bigot. They seem to understand it better than anyone else.

Sean Penn brings home a much deserved Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Harvey Milk in Milk. In a night dominated by Slum Dog Millionaire, Dustin Lance Black also won Best Original Screenplay for Milk.

Some words from Penn’s acceptance speech…

…For those who saw the signs of hatred as our cars drove in tonight, I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect, and anticipate theor great shame, and the shame in theirgrandchildren’s eyes if they continue that way of support. We’ve got to have equal rights for everyone.

It’s hard not to be moved to tears… Here is a quote from Black’s acceptance speech…

When I was 13 years old, my beautiful mother and my father moved me from a conservative Mormon home in San Antonio, Texas, to California, and I heard the story of Harvey Milk. And it gave me hope. It gave me the hope to live my life; it gave me the hope that one day I could live my life openly as who I am and that maybe even I could fall in love and one day get married…

Most of all, if Harvey had not been taken from us 30 years ago, I think he’d want me to say to all of the gay and lesbian kids out there tonight who have been told they are less than by their churches, or by the government, or by their families, that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures of value. And that no matter what everyone tells you, God does love you, and that very soon, I promise you, you will have equal rights federally across this great nation of ours.
