Bondi Beach flash mobAnother fabulous flash mob, this time from the beautiful land down under. Put on by RockYourBox and led by one of Australia’s most famous drag queens Joyce Maynge, a group of volunteer dancers hit the beach last Saturday to dance their pretty little hearts out. Oh what a great way to start the (if i a bit late) morning, and from my favorite city and beach on earth. Enjoy.

H/T to JMG for making my day.

Gay-inclusive adoption bill introduced in Congress

Rep. Pete StarkLast week Rep. Pete Stark of California introduced the Every Child Deserves a Family Act which denies federal funding to states with adoption programs that discriminate on the basis of marital status, sexual orientation or gender identity. From the Washington Blade:

Stark said in an interview that he introduced the legislation, H.R. 3827, in part because thousands of children each year “age out” of the child welfare system without finding homes.

“We got 25,000 kids a year maturing out of the welfare system without permanent foster care or adoptive care, and the prospects of those children having a successful adult life are diminished greatly,” he said. “These are kids who end up in the criminal justice system, or end up homeless.”

States with explicit restrictions on adoption that the pending legislation would affect are Utah, Florida, Arkansas, Nebraska and Mississippi. Florida, for example, has a statute specifically prohibiting gays from adopting, and in Arkansas, voters last year approved Act 1, which prevents unmarried co-habitating couples, including same-sex partners, from adopting children.

The legislation, Stark said, also would restrict funds for states where restrictions are put in place by agencies, individual social workers or judges, or where restrictions are part of the common law of the state.

For states that don’t comply with the law, federal officials could withhold from the states funds provided to them for child welfare services. The bill also calls.

This is very good news, and it’s likely to create quite a curfuffle among the religious right, and Catholics in particular. Take Bill Donohue of the Catholic League for example, who appeared on Pat Robertson’s 700 Club last week to pimp his new book and said this about gays and adoption: “We’re not going to allow gay people to adopt children. That’s against nature. It’s against nature’s God! But they won’t stop!”

If H.R. 3827 passes, perhaps it will be the event that finally makes Bill’s head explode. We can dream can’t we?

Local flavor: Irate SF Muni passenger screams faggot at transgender on crowded train

SF Muni BigotI don’t know what’s more disturbing. The ranting of this bigot or that no one called her out. She should have been ejected from the train. Watch:

Stephanie Chu who shot the video said the following on SFIst:

I filmed this on a MUNI T train this morning on my way to work. I found it appalling that this woman would be so hateful towards a gay/transgender person – so I had no qualms about putting her face on the Internet. At one point, it got physical. The train was held up for about 10 minutes until she calmed down, then the cops came to take their statements. I thought it might be interesting to share how intolerance is still very much alive, even in liberal cities like SF.

Apparently, she works at a hospital (she wore scrubs) off of the T line, I am guessing UCSF Mission Bay.

Anyone know who this lovely person is? Apparently she was wearing a lanyard that said “I love Jesus.” Boy, what a surprise.

FedEx extends protections to transgendered employees

FedEx extends protections to transgendered employeesFedEx has agreed to extend employment protections to its transgendered employees, a change in policy that comes at the request of Northstar Asset Management, Inc., which filed a resolution seeking protection against any form of job discrimination based on gender identity. Julie Goodridge, CEO of NorthStar Asset Management, Inc. said that “FedEx responded with a desire to understand and incorporate such a policy.”

“Transgender people suffer the greatest amount of discrimination in the workforce and have little recourse due to the lack of protection under state and federal law,” Goodridge noted. “While it is unfortunate that the Federal government has yet to pass an inclusive Non-Discrimination Act that includes all people, thankfully there are U.S. corporations like FedEx who are determined to protect and value all of their workers…they are leading the way potentially years ahead of Capitol Hill.”

While it is a step forward for the company, earlier this year FedEx refused to extend domestic partner benefits to its employees citing the Defense of Marriage Act.
