Happy Birthday Harvey Milk! We miss ya!

activism, lgbt, politics, video No Comments »

Happy Birthday Harvey Milk! It’s been almost 31 years since Dan White took Harvey Milk from us, and who knows where we would be now if he were still with us. Harvey’s courage and wisdom would have guided us though the AIDS crisis here in San Francisco and the growing gay rights movement that followed. He would have been 79-years-young today.

Even though Governor Schwarzenegger has yet to sign a bill instituting Harvey Milk Day, there’s no reason why we can’t celebrate it. California Ripple Effect put together a great list of things we could do to honor Harvey’s memory…

I’ll close with Harvey’s famous “Hope” speech, used so eloquently in the video below. And where ever your are Harvey, Happy Birthday!

Really? Anita Bryant’s not dead? WTF?

As horrible as it sounds, I’ve always taken a small measure of comfort in thinking Anita Bryant, who worked so tirelessly in the 70s to strip gays and lesbians of their human rights and reduce them to second class citizens, was no longer with us. Which is not the same as wishing them dead, not exactly anyway.

I guess I’ve been living under a rock. I was wrong. Terribly wrong.

Sean Penn brings home the Milk, wins Best Actor Oscar

Sean Penn brings home a much deserved Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Harvey Milk in Milk. In a night dominated by Slum Dog Millionaire, Dustin Lance Black also won Best Original Screenplay for Milk.

Some words from Penn’s acceptance speech…

…For those who saw the signs of hatred as our cars drove in tonight, I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect, and anticipate theor great shame, and the shame in theirgrandchildren’s eyes if they continue that way of support. We’ve got to have equal rights for everyone.
