Battlestar Galactica characters come out of the closet?

entertainment, lgbt, video 1 Comment »

POTENTIAL SPOILER: Rumor has it that Lt. Felix Gaeta will finally come out of the closet with Lt. Hoshi on new Battlestar Galactica webisodes airing Friday Dec. 11 through January, running up to the series 4.5 premiere on January 16, 2009.

Played by Alessandro Juliani, Lt. Gaeta has long been considered by gay fans of the show the most likely character to be gay. While not the first LGBT character in the series, let’s hope he fairs better than Admiral Cain of the Pegasus who was a lesbian, had an affair with a Cylon, and was later shot in the head (and not because she was a lesbian, or had an affair … she was just really mean).

The awkward scene below from season one is perhaps the first of many clues that Gaeta may bat for the other team. After re-watching the clip, I wonder if Baltar has a wide stance?

As not to be totally trite, the following scenes are from one of last season’s most moving episodes, where Lt. Gaeta sings a sad lament after one of his legs has been amputated.

Estelle Getty passes away at 84

Perhaps I am showing my age here.. but yeah I was a fan of the Golden Girls. Not a rabid, must sit in front of the TV whenever it’s on fan.. but a fan never-the-less. Initially I watched mostly for Bea Arthur (Maude) and Betty White (Match Game), again showing my age here, but grew fond of Estelle Getty and Rue McClanahan over the course of the show. They were the senior version of Sex and the City before Carrie put on her first Manolo Blahniks…

Estelle “Sophia” Getty passed away this morning at 84. You will be missed.

George Carlin 1937-2008, RIP

I’ve always been a fan of George Carlin, and at a far younger age than my parents would have ever liked — of course I was also reading Stephen King in 5th grade, and I turned out alright… didn’t I? 🙂

George was all about the social commentary, and turning the mundane on its head. Famous for the “Seven Words you can’t say on Television,” I will always remember his treatise on leftovers.

“Leftovers make you feel good twice. First, when you put it away, you feel thrifty and intelligent: ‘I’m saving food!’ Then a month later when blue hair is growing out of the ham, and you throw it away, you feel really intelligent: ‘I’m saving my life!’”

Below is an abbreviated version of the piece from George Carlin at Carnegie Hall. Watch the clip below at the 12:40 mark. Feel free to watch the whole thing as it’s vintage George, just not quite safe for work.

Goodbye George, your candor and wit will be missed in times such as these.

Heath Ledger Dead, Pundit Mocks Passing…

I usually hate painting with broad swathes of color. But this contemptible, steaming pile of excrement leaves me little choice. Listen to this audio clip of John Gibson on his Fox radio show which aired yesterday.

While not typically an advocate of violence, there’s nothing I’d like to do more than throw this SOB under the bus. And while we’re at it, let’s throw Bill O’Reilly, and Sean Hannity, and Anne Coulter, and Chris Wallace, and Bill Kristol under the bus too… Sure… I could go on… there’s an endless parade of hypocrites that deserve to be wedged between the tire treads, but frankly… we’d need a bigger bus.

And while not much of a fan of censorship.. I’d love to muzzle Fox News. Ban them from the airwaves. And throw Rupert Murdoch in jail (I might have to manufacture a charge, but Bill O’Reilly does that all the time. Perhaps I can ask him for help, no wait a minute… he’s still under the bus). And gleefully I will watch the hypocrisy dissipate from the airwaves as Fox News fades into a distant memory.

Perhaps then, and only then… will those who call themselves viewers begin to think for themselves, and perhaps.. maybe.. stop voting against their best interests. And finally, awaken from that long dream where Ronald Reagan saved the world and made America great again. (Well I can wish.. can I?)

But perhaps it is me living in a dream. So please… let me wake up.

Good bye Heath. We’ll miss ya. Godspeed.
