Justice of the peace denies couple marriage license because ‘the children will later suffer’

lgbt, politics 1 Comment »

kbardwellAccording to an Associated Press story, Louisiana justice of the Peace, Keith Bardwell, denied a marriage license to a STRAIGHT couple. The couple just happened to be interracial.

According to the Tangipahoa Parish Justice of the Peace,

“I don’t do interracial marriages because I don’t want to put children in a situation they didn’t bring on themselves,” Bardwell said. “In my heart, I feel the children will later suffer.”

It seems the he thinks interracial marriages are ephemeral at best and their offspring aren’t accepted by Black or White society. I guess based on that Britney Spears won’t be getting hitched any time soon in this Parish of her home state. Her marriages have a half life less than the life span of your typical Mayfly.

And these are some of the same arguments used against allowing gays to get married. The marriage won’t last and the kids will suffer. Since when has the longevity of a marriage, or the fairness of the world to children that may be cared for by that couple ever been considered grounds for allowing two people to get married?

It seems folks will use any argument, logical or not, to prevent the marriage of those which they do not approve.

Agents in Rainbow Lounge raid found guilty of multiple violations

Rainbow Lounge in Fort Worth, TXAn internal affairs investigation has concluded that agents committed multiple violations in a raid at the Rainbow Lounge, a gay bar in Fort Worth, Texas, which left one man hospitalized with serious brain injuries.

Agent Christopher Aller and agent trainee Jason Chapman are accused of participating in the June 28 raid without their supervisor’s approval, disrupting the business during the raid and wearing improper attire in the beverage commission report obtained by The Associated Press under the Texas Open Records Act.

The investigation also found that one of the agents’ supervisors, Sgt. Terry Parsons, failed to ensure the agents submitted a report on using force during the arrest, did not take appropriate action after learning they didn’t wear proper attire during the raid and did not notifying supervisors multiple arrests had been made that night, the report states.

Aller and Chapman have been placed on desk duty pending the outcome of the investigation, and Parsons decided to retire. All three could face disciplinary action ranging from a verbal warning to job termination for numerous policy violations, but no decision has been made on any penalties, agency spokeswoman Carolyn Beck said.

Fate of hate crimes bill now uncertain, may be attached to defense bill

Hate Crimes LegislationSources for Bilerico and Pam’s House Blend have learned that the hate crimes bill currently working its way through the Senate will most likely be attached to a defense authorization package, since there are not enough votes to pass it as a standalone bill. Hate crimes legislation was shelved back in 2007 when this same tactic was used. From Bil Browing at Bilreco:

Remember how well that worked out for us last time?

Congressmembers can use our lives to bargain for bombs and defense spending instead of simply affirming our dignity as human beings worthy of safety from persecution and violence if hate crimes are added to the defense authorization.

You need to call your Senator NOW and ask them to save the hate crimes bill from certain death! If it’s added to the defense authorization bill it will be the death of hate crimes this year.

You can look up your Senator’s direct phone number here or call (202) 224-3121 and tell them to SAVE THE HATE CRIMES BILL.

And at a hearing on hate crimes this morning Attorney General Eric Holder voiced support for the bill even as some Democrats displayed an abundance of ignorance, repeating the same tired meme that hate crimes would curb the free speech of churches and people of faith. From AP:

… Democratic lawmaker, Sen. Richard Durbin of Illinois, both voiced concerns that the bill could be used to prosecute a church leader who speaks out against homosexuality, if a member of their congregation then assaults a gay person.

“This is a bill to hold people accountable for conduct, not for speech,” Holder insisted.

Update: Myself and other blogs have unfortunately mischaracterized Durbin’s comments based on the AP article. After watching the hearings it was clear that Durbin was characterizing questions posed by his constituents and not necessarily his personal views.

Judy and Dennis Shepard, parents of Matthew Shepard for whom the act is named, appeared on CNN defending the hate crimes bill. Watch:

Please contact your senator and urge them to support S. 909, the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009.

Obama to extend benefits to partners of gay federal employees

Barack ObamaFrom the Associated Press:

President Barack Obama plans to extend health care and other benefits to the gay and lesbian partners of federal employees. White House officials say Obama plans to announce decision on Wednesday in the Oval Office. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the president had not yet made the announcement.

The move would give partners of federal employees access to health care and financial benefits such as relocation fees for moves. Officials say Obama would detail more details of the decision on Wednesday.

I suspect this is an effort to quieten or placate the growing anger over lack of progress on LGBT issues and the recent DOMA brief.

Update: On the Rachel Maddow show this evening, Chuck Todd said there was some question whether the benefits granted would be through Executive Order or by Memorandum, which is how the administration is framing it. If by Executive Order, only another Executive Order could overturn it. In the case of a Memorandum, Todd was under the impression that a Memorandum only lasts the duration of that presidency.

If by Memorandum…. NOT GOOD ENOUGH! Video to follow…
