DOMA repeal introduced in Congress

Nadler introduces Respect for Marriage ActCongressman Jerrold Nadler of New York introduced the “Respect For Marriage Act,” in the House today which seeks to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

At a Capitol Hill press conference, Nadler called the Respect for Marriage Act “the first step to overturning the Defense of Marriage Act and sending that ugly law into the history books where it belongs.”

“Our bill ensures that all married couples, including lawfully married same-sex couples, will have the same access to federal responsibilities and benefits, including critical programs like Social Security that are intended to ensure the stability and security of American families,” Nadler said.

The repeal legislation would only facilitate federal recognition of same-sex marriages — not civil unions or domestic partnerships. Additionally, the bill contains a “certainty provision” allowing married same-sex couples to receive the federal benefits of marriage even if they move to a state that doesn’t recognize their union.

Nadler said the task ahead in trying to overturn DOMA “is not easy” and that he expects opponents of repeal to try to keep DOMA on the books by “making false claims that our bill will force same-sex marriage on unwilling states.”

The bill has already garnered 90 co-sponsors, including Reps. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) and Jared Polis (D-Colo). Noticeably absent from the list is Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA), who believes the bill is not achievable in the short term.

Earlier this year Nadler introduced the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA) which unfortunately has stalled pending larger immigration reform.

Teabaggers in DCYes. Didn’t you know? Sure it happens near the end of the clip but it’s totally worth the wait.

This is what we are up against folks, and I wonder, sometimes, how we are going to make it.

Signorile takes on NOM’s Brian Brown

Signorile vs. BrownIn what few would consider a fair fight, Sirius XM host Mike Signorile took on National Organization for Marriage (NOM) executive director Brian Brown, making short work of Brown’s feeble, empty-headed arguments.

It’s truly amazing that characters like Maggie Gallagher and Brian Brown are able to keep NOM afloat considering how ineffective they are in defending positions which fail under the mildest of scrutiny. Just take a look back at some of Brown’s earlier work on Penn & Teller’s Bullsh!t.

Former Miss California Carrie Prejean suing for religious discrimination

Carrie PrejeanForever playing the victim, former Miss California and conservative darling Carrie Prejean has decided to sue her the Miss California organization for religious discrimination.

Prejean just filed the suit in L.A. County Superior Court, accusing Moakler and pageant honcho Keith Lewis of religious discrimination, defamation, public disclosure of private facts, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and negligent infliction of emotional distress.

Prejean was dethroned/fired from her post as Miss California USA back on June 10, nearly two months after she spoke out against gay marriage at the April 19th Miss USA competition.

Prejean claims the Miss Cali people “conspired to get rid of her” beginning on April 21st — when she said on the “Today” show that she would rather be “biblically correct than politically correct.”

Prejean also will have a book out in November called “Still Standing,” detailing her experiences since coming out as a homophobe on national television. Coincidence?

Once a media whore… always a media whore.
